The Man of the Madness

Ross P. Brewer

Ross Peyton Brewer is a Texas-native born artist, animator, and game developer.

Growing up in Sugar Land, Texas in the Houston area, Ross is set to graduate from the University of North Texas in December 2022 with a BFA in Drawing and Painting, and pursue an MFA in Studio Art at University of Texas at Austin or an MFA in Visualization from the School of Visualization at Texas A&M University. Ross previously attended Houston Community College to fill out his General Studies.

He prefers to work primarily in charcoal and dry pastels, as they are media that lend themselves greatly to the self described “chaotic-start-orderly-finish” style—also known as the “Tasmanian Devil” method—he has been developing. They are media that work to enhance the aspects of his personality he believes critical as an artist: his ability to let loose his wild ideas on the page, the ability to stop on one idea to turn to the next, to turn and change, to create, to destroy, to shape and reshape to mold something beautiful. This idea can also be found in his choice of acrylic paint over oil based media. Acrylic allowing him the shorter drying time to correct mistakes on the fly, whereas oil-based paintings would take several hours to dry, correct the mistake, and then add something new. It is not that his art style focuses on speed, it’s that it focuses on energy and the wild dynamism that comes with it. To try and bottle that lightning with media that requires a significant time commitment would be to ultimately extract the very concepts that make his works so engaging.

Ross’s artwork focuses on physical explorations of the human form and the environment around them in the media of pastels, acrylic paint, charcoal, and digital media. His work mainly focuses on dynamic displays of energy either in the form of explosive figure renderings or figures in motion via animation. The main inspiration from his work comes in the form of tackling new challenges, accepting his frustrations and failures, and processing them onto the canvas to achieve a greater depth of work. As such he is no stranger to exploring new media or accepting new demands; he thrives in these conditions. Thrives in the space that is the creative sciences he finds himself and the absolute freedom of experimentation that comes with it. Thrives in the failures that comes from these first attempts, and soars higher on his second attempt.

He currently resides in Denton, Texas continuing his education and looking for internships and employment in the professional commercial art industry.
